What are Fibre Arts New Zealand events?
Fibre Arts New Zealand runs events that provide participants with the opportunity to work with both New Zealand and overseas artists and craftspeople who are experts in their fields. Some workshops focus on techniques whilst others are designed to push the participants to think about their creative practice in a new light or in a new direction.
At the annual five day residential event, participants select one workshop and work with that tutor for the duration of the event. At breaks and in the evenings, there is plenty of time for socialising with and being inspired by the other participants.
Where are the Fibre Arts New Zealand events held?
The annual five day residential event is held at Whanganui Girls College in Whanganui, New Zealand. Whanganui is about a 2.5 hour drive from Wellington or 1 hour drive from Palmerston North. It can also be reached by air from Auckland.
What do I need to bring for my workshop?
You will be sent a requirements list from the tutor. The tutor may also supply some materials to students and may charge students a materials fee to cover these.
Where can I stay when I'm at Fibre Arts New Zealand events?
Participants at the annual Fibre Arts New Zealand residential event in Whanganui are able to stay and eat at Ad Astra, which is the hostel associated with Whanganui Girls' College.
The accommodation is boarding school hostel style. All rooms are single. Bedding and linen is provided. Returning participants are able to request the room they stayed in, in the previous year.
The meals are of an excellent standard and special dietary needs are catered for. There is parking available on site.
You can also choose to be a day student and find your own accommodation locally. The fee for day students also includes some meals.
Can I buy supplies at Fibre Arts NZ events?
There are a limited number of traders on site to provide an opportunity to purchase or order textile supplies.
Can I display and sell my work?
On the last afternoon, there is a Pop-up Exhibition. The Pop-up exhibition is a display of the work created by the participants in each of the workshops.
Can I display and sell my work?
The Art Market provides an opportunity for participants to sell work from their own art practice.
How do the participants at the Fibre Arts NZ residential event encourage future fibre artists?
Participants are able to make a piece of art, no larger than 10 x 10 x 10 cms, to be displayed at the Fibre Arts event all week. These are sold for $10 each with the proceeds used to fund the attendance of students at the following year's five day residential event.
